Methodology
Calorie burn while walking is estimated here using the American College of Sports Medicine's standard walking metabolic equation: VO₂ (ml/kg/min) = 0.1 × speed (m/min) + 3.5 (flat ground) METs = VO₂ ÷ 3.5 Calories per minute = METs × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 Total calories = calories per minute × duration (minutes) This equation is designed for walking speeds roughly between 1.9 and 3.7 mph; pace values outside that range fall outside where this specific equation has been validated.

To use this with a step count, your steps are first converted to distance using this site's Steps to Miles methodology, then combined with your selected or entered pace to determine duration for the calculation above.
This calculator does not use a flat "steps × constant = calories" formula — that approach ignores body weight, the single largest factor in individual calorie burn.

For 10,000 steps at 70 kg (154 lb) and a moderate walking pace of 3.0 mph, using the default 2,000–2,500 steps-per-mile distance range, the estimated calorie burn is 323–404 kcal. This example is generated from the same walking equation used by the calculator.
Accuracy / Limitations
This is an estimate, not a measurement. Calorie expenditure varies with body weight, walking pace, terrain, incline, fitness level, individual physiology, walking form, and actual duration. When steps are converted into duration using an assumed or entered walking pace, that pace assumption affects the result. Treat the result as a reasonable estimate, never an exact figure.
FAQ
Do all 10,000 steps burn the same calories?
No. Calorie burn from 10,000 steps depends heavily on body weight and walking pace. A heavier person or someone walking at a brisker pace may expend more energy than a lighter person walking slowly, even with the same step count.
Why does this calculator ask for my weight, when the Steps to Miles Calculator doesn't?
Distance depends mainly on step count and step length. Calorie expenditure additionally depends on body weight, so this calculator requires more information.
Does running burn more calories per step than walking?
Generally, running has a higher intensity and different energy-expenditure characteristics than walking. This calculator is designed around walking assumptions and should not be presented as a running-calorie calculator.
